Carl was born to Marshall and Mary Cowan on May 18, 1927 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was the youngest of eight children. His family soon relocated to Washington, DC where upon completing his education he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served during World War II. Following his stint in the Army he returned to the Washington area where he met and married the love of his life Joyce Mayo. Carl worked for NASA at Gooddard Space Center in Maryland. Carl retired from NASA in 1975 and made the decision to move "out west." The family settled in Boulder City in January, 1976. Carl became a realtor working at several realty offices here in Boulder City. As the years passed, he became interested in becoming a Real Estate Appraiser. Carl worked as an appraiser with his daughter and son-in-law, Cathie and Jim, and grandson Joe, until the Lord called him home last week. Carl had a passion for music, he became involved with the Las Vegas Gamblers where he sang barber shop music, he also sang with a barber shop group here in Boulder City. It was his love of singing that lead him to join the Christian Center Foursquare Gospel Church, where he was a very active member. Carl believed being busy was what kept him going, he was always involved in something, such as a bowling league, Sunrise Rotary Club, choir and Bible study. Carl was preceded in death by a son-in-law Jerry Slinkman, Sr., his siblings, Mary, James, Earl, John, Ed, Leland, Tracy and his wife of 49 years Joyce. They are survived by their four children Cathie and her husband Jim Camp, George and his wife Tina Cowan, of Boulder City, Margaret (Peggy) and her husband James Crawford of Charlottesville, Virginia and Michael and his wife Sharon Dow of Sacramento, California. 12 Grandchildren: Kimberly Wilcher, Carrie and her husband Noel Kerwick, Jerry and his wife Vicki Slinkman, all of Virginia, Michael and his wife Jacque Curl of Boulder City, Lori and her husband Robert Hill of San Pedro, Loretta and her husband David Sargeant of Boulder City, Joseph Camp, Robert and his wife Lindsay Cowan of Henderson, April and her husband Stacy Barba of Las Vegas, Carl (Ryan) Camp, Rebecca Cowan of Boulder City and Elizabeth Dow of Sacramento. 12 Great-Grandchildren: Maggie Slinkman, Tyler Wilcher, Julie Sargeant, Allyson Sargeant, McKenzie Cowan, Emily Hill, Kayla Camp, Jasmyn Curl, Aaron Hill, Jaelyn Curl, Jordan Cowan and Daisy Camp. Memorial services will be held today, August 12, 2004, at 9:30 a.m. at the Best Western Lighthouse Inn Convention Hall, 110 Ville Dr., Boulder City. A Military Honor Guard will be at the Veteran Cemetery Chapel at 11:20 a.m. with burial to follow.
