Farnsworth, 95, came to the valley with her husband, David, in 1909, according to her family. Together with two friends, she started the Mesquite Club in 1910 after noticing the need for a women's organization. The club, located at 702 E. St. Louis Ave., is the oldest women's cultural and social group in Las Vegas. One of the club's first activities involved planting 1,100 trees in the area around Second, Third and Fourth streets to provide shade for pedestrians in the area. Many of those trees are still standing. Farnsworth was one of the original organizers and members of the Las Vegas Methodist Church, which was started in 1905. She also was a member of the Nevada Foundation of Women's Clubs, Hostess Club, Southern Nevada Community Concert Association, U-Wah-Un Study Club and, during the war years, an active supporter of the Red Cross. Born Feb. 3, 1888 in Webb City, Mo., Farnsworth moved to Southern California with her family in 1901. She married David on Aug. 22, 1908 and moved with him to Las Vegas a year later. Their first child, now Dorothy Preston, was the first child born in Clark County after it separated from Lincoln County on July 1, 1909. Except for a brief return to California in the 1920s, Farnsworth was a permanent resident of Las Vegas. She had a passion for history and antiques and owned a valuable collection of plates and glassware. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Palm Memorial Park. The viewing will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Survivors include her daughter Dorothy, sons-in-law O. W. Preston and E. L. Casey of Las Vegas, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family has asked that memorials be made to Gallaudet College for the Deaf in Washington, D. C., 20002, in lieu of flowers.
