LONGTIME EDUCATOR FYFE DIES



Services will be held Wednesday for Ruth Fyfe, a longtime Clark County educator 
and principal, who died Saturday in a local convalescent home.  She was 93.

Fyfe was born Nov. 25, 1896 in Ogden, Iowa.  She was graduated from Iowa State 
Teachers College in 1916 and received her first teaching job at the same school 
where she had gone for schooling during first through eighth grades.

Fyfe came to Las Vegas at the age of 28 when she decided to move to a better 
climate for health reasons.

Her first class of 30 to 40 children was at the Westside School where she 
taught all subjects to the third and fourth-graders in one of the two rooms 
that made up the entire school.  Before leaving the school in 1935, she became 
its principal.

Fyfe later became principal of Washington School in North Las Vegas.   She 
remained there until 1943 when she became principal of the North Ninth Street 
School, where she remained until her retirement in 1957.

After 33 years as an educator in Clark County, she became instrumental in 
organizing an association for retired teachers in the area.

In addition, on Dec. 9, 1964, the Ruth Fyfe Elementary School at 4101 W. 
Bonanza Road was dedicated in her honor.

She is survived by three cousins.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the downtown Palm Mortuary, and 
services will follow immediately.  Burial will be at Palm Memorial Park.
