A. PEET, RECOVERED FROM KEY WEST SHAFT AFTER 14 DAYS The body of Charles A. PEET, principal owner and superintendent of the Key West Mine, located about 15 [miles]northwest of St. Thomas, was recovered from the shaft Friday after having been there 14 days. On the day of the accident, the superitendent of the mine went down the shaft with one of the miners, each standing on the rim of the iron bucket on opposite sides of the cable. They stopped the bucket at the 150 foot level and started to get off the bucket, when Mr. PEET slipped and fell a distance of 75 feet, his body striking on the timbers just above the water which filled the bottom of the shaft for a distance of 25 feet. He was probably dead before he reached the bottom of the shaft. Those above made an attempt to rescue the body but it slipped from its insecure resting place into the water and sank. It was necessary to stop the pump and the water gradually raised until it was 90 feet deep. This made the work of securing the body very difficult and for fourteen days it was in the shaft. It appears from reports, that the exhaust from the mine engine is discharged into the shaft. This, it is said, heated the water to such a degree that the body was cooked and in a horrible condition when raised. Friday morning after the body had been brought to the surface of the water and placed in the bucket to be raised to the top, Albert WITTWER, of Bunkerville, impanelled a coroner's jury and held an inquest. W. C. ZIMMERMAN left Vegas last Thursday night in response to telegraphic instructions to the undertaker, and went after the body, returning with it Friday evening. The remains were prepared for shipment and will be sent to Salt Lake City today for interment. Mr. PEET was a well known mining man of Salt Lake City. He is said to be one of the largest owners of the Key West mine and to be interested in other mining enterprises.
