F. WATSON, aged about 76 years. Mr. WATSON was one of the old miners of Vegas, having made this headquarters for his mining and prospecting for the past 14 years. He had mining claims in Arizona across the Colorado river from Las Vegas and was accustomed to spend long periods in the solitudes of his camp on the river. Last June, he accompanied a party of which J. Heber RICHARDS, of the firm of Taylor and Richards in Salt Lake, B. H. VINCENT of Sandy City, Utah and H. H. WHEELER of Needles, Cal., were members, across the river to his mining claims, some seven miles beyond. On the return trip which was made on foot in the hottest portion of the day, Mr. WATSON was unable to keep up with the party and asked them to proceed, allowing him to take his own time. Mr. RICHARDS refused to leave Mr. WATSON and died from the intense heat in a box canyon. Mr. WATSON made his way to the river alone and reported the death of Mr. RICHARDS, but he, himself never entirely recovered from his trying ordeal. For several months he has been suffering from heart trouble. Saturday he was taken with a spell of heart failure and was carried to the Las Vegas Hospital, where he survived until Monday afternoon, about 4 o'clock, when he died. The funeral services were conducted by Vegas Lodge No. 32, F. & A.M. with W. H. COPPER, W. M. officiating. Mr. WATSON was a native of Mississippi and fought in many of the battles of the Civil war on the side of the Confederacy. He was a Mason for many years, and recently transferred his membership from his old lodge in Missouri, where he was several times master of his lodge, to Vegas lodge. He spent many years in the zinc district about Joplin, MO, and later, in the camps of Colorado during their palmy days. He leaves surviving him a sister, Mrs. J.M. ALLEN, of Watervalley, Miss., two brothers in Florida and a nephew who is now in the army. Like many of the old prospectors, Mr. WATSON was rather inclined to keep his own counsel and not much is known here concerning his affairs. He was of a kindly and lovable disposition, a good man and Mason, and we sincerely regret his passing. His Masonry was his religion and when the spirit took its flight across the dark river, his tired hand was grasping that of a close Masonic friend and brother, as if for support during the last moments of his toilsome journey.
