D. HICKS, aged 42 years, 10 months and 15 days. The funeral services at the house were private, but a large number of people filled the street and yard. The casket was covered with many beautiful floral tributes. The music was especially beautiful and appropriate. Mrs. ESPESET rendering a vocal solo and a quartette composed of Mrs. ESPESET, Mrs. J. W. SQUIRES, Mr. HULL and Mr. STONE singing "Lead Kindly Light." Rev. W. H. ROGERS impressively read the beautiful Twenty-third Psalm. The casket was then taken in charge by Las Vegas Lodge No. 22 F & A. M. of which the deceased was a member, and escorted to the City Cemetery where the Masonic burial service was carried out by Worshipful Master W. H. POPPER. A very large number of automobiles filled with friends followed the remains to their last resting place. The pall bearers were W. R. BRACKEN, R. J. YOUNG, Jr., E. E. SMITH, Roy W. MARTIN, W. N. SCHUYLER and Wm. S. PARK. The passing of O. D. HICKS leaves a void in the hearts of our people. He had for several years been suffering from the dread white plague and for several months past was gradually sinking, so that the end was not unexpected. From the earliest days of Las Vegas, O. D. HICKS was an active character. In 1905, with B. F. BOGGS, he opened a cigar and confectionery store in a building located on first street just north of where the Colorado hotel now stands. Later the business moved into the bank building, then into the store on Fremont street now occupied by Boggs Brothers grocery, and still later into the Las Vegas Hotel building. After selling that business, Mr. HICKS became associated with C. P. BALL in the transfer business. During all these years he made Vegas his home, except for a year or two about 1908-1910, which he spent in Tampa, Florida. He served a term with credit as one of the city commissioners of Las Vegas. He was a kindly and congenial spirit who made for himself warm friendship, and his memory will long live in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves surviving, his widow, who has been his faithful helpmate to the end; a brother, Fred N. HICKS, residing in Tampa, Florida, and a sister, Mrs. Ella MC BIRD, of Denver, Colorado. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/nvfiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
