E. MARSHALL of Overton have received the following letter regarding the manner in which Woodruff PERKINS met his death on the battlefield of France. Woodruff was the first Clark county boy to give his life in the great war, and the letter will be of interest to his many friends.: "Company D, 26th Infantry, "France, August 9, 1918 "Mrs. R. E. MARSHALL, Overton, Clark County, Nevada: "In reply to your letter of July 8th there is very little I can tell you in regard to the death of your brother, Private First Class Woodruff PERKINS. We had just moved into our front line position and had only been there about an hour, when the Huns opened a violent bombardment upon us, preliminary to attempting a raid. "Your brother was hit by a fragment of shell and was promptly evacuated to the rear, despite the heavy shelling, and was rushed to the field hospital. Death to him came painlessly, as he never regained consciousness, death occurring the next day. "Your brother was a very gallant soldier, well liked by all who knew him, and he died doing his duty as an American soldier. "With my deepest sympathy, I am, "Very respectfully, "C.
