ERWIN, WELL KNOWN MINING MAN, MEETS DEATH IN ELDORADO CANYON Saturday morning, June 12, as C. W. ERWIN, better known among his friends and associates as "Bill" ERWIN, was going down the ladder in the shaft of the M & D Mine in Copper Canyon in the Eldorado district, the ladder gave way, and the unfortunate man fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 40 feet, his head being crushed and death instantaneously. The accident occurred at 9:05 a.m. Mr. W. J. CROZIER, partner of Mr. ERWIN, who was working with him immediately descended into the shaft and found that Mr. ERWIN was dead. He immediately went for help and brought the body to the surface. Mr. CROZIER and Dr. DUNBAR brought the remains to Las Vegas Saturday evening. ERWIN and CROZIER had been working for Clark ALVORD on the M & D mine for about 11 days and had about a week's work still to do. Charles William ERWIN was born in Decatur, Illinois July 23, 1874. He came to Searchlight in 1906 and has been interested in mining in Eldorado Canyon since 1907. Two years ago he was married to Mrs. Josephine MECRA, who was residing at the Stewart ranch in this city at the time of the accident. Besides his widow, he leaves surviving him two brothers, Ernest ERWIN of Oxnard, Cal., and George ERWIN of Los Angeles; his mother, father, three brothers and two sisters, living in Illinois. The two brothers, Ernest and George, came to Vegas and were present at the funeral. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, June 16, 1920, at four o'clock p.m. from the Methodist church, Rev. Wm. H. ROGERS officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery. The deceased had been associated since 1907 with Wm. J. CROZIER, who is shocked and deeply grieved at the death of his partner. During the last year or two they have been devoting much of their time to investigating the possibilities of finding oil fields in this section and were very hopeful of success. "Bill" ERWIN was universally esteemed for his manly qualities. He was quiet and pleasant in manner and speech yet full of the strength and vigor of high purpose. He was a pleasant companion and a staunch friend. In his untimely death we will miss the passing of one more of those sterling characters to which the great west voiced its call. We feel a deep personal loss which is shared by all who knew him. Our sympathy goes out in unstinted measure to the widow and to all those who are so sadly bereaved by this act of an inscrutable providence.
