James SMITH, who cares for the Elwell warehouse in the old automobile stage building, was sitting outside the building at the time, and was, so far as known, the only eyewitness of the tragedy. At the inquest he testified that he noticed two Mexicans pass him, and that they went as far as the bridge, where they stopped for about ten minutes and engaged in an altercation. Then as they were standing about four feet apart, one drew a revolver and shot. The other man did not fall until the third shot, after which the murderer turned off the bridge and walked toward the railroad. MASIA was found lying face down on the bridge, with one shot entirely through the body near the heart. L. B. SHURTLIFF, night policeman, testified that he was placing another Mexican in the jail nearby, when he heard the shots and hastened to the scene, to find MASIA dead and the murderer nowhere to be seen. MASIA came up from Sloan Saturday and returned to the camp that night, to come again Sunday. But little is known of him. The murderer has not been apprehended.
