M. WELK: At the family residence, 5916 South Flower street, Los Angeles, Monday July 4, 1921, Victor Hugo WELK, age 44 years, 8 months, and 9 days. The funeral services were conducted by Southern California Lodge No. 278, F. & A.M. of which he was a member, Thursday afternoon at 3:00 at the home, and a large number of sorrowing friends were present. The floral tributes were unusually profuse and beautiful, a mute testimony to the high regard in which the deceased was held. Mr. WELK leaves of his immediate family surviving him, his mother, Mrs. Emillie WELK, and two brothers, Osma C. WELK and Fred M. WELK. The editor of the Age confronts a grievous task in his efforts to chronicle the unhappy tidings of "Hughie's" death. For more than two years he has been like a member of our own family. We have been bound to him in the tie of close companionship and affection, his cheery and kindly ways having made friends of all. He was born in Wisconsin, March 25, 1877, and at the age of 10 years came to California with his parents. The family took up their residence in Los Angeles, where the years of his boyhood were spent. For more than 15 years past, he has lived of his own choice in the desert country. For a number of years he was in the employ of Yount & Fayle at Goodsprings and later of George A. FAYLE. After the death of Mr. FAYLE and the disposal of the Goodsprings store, Mr. WELK about two years ago entered the employ of the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad in the storehouse department in this city. His ability and fidelity won for him the full confidence and approval of his superiors. Feeling indisposed, Mr. WELK remained at home for several days and then determined to take his vacation at this time, securing a thirty day leave of absence. He left Las Vegas Saturday evening, June 25th planning to spend a few days with his mother and brothers in Los Angeles and then to go to the mountains for an outing. At the time of leaving he anticipated meeting Vegas friends in Los Angeles for an evening at the theatre. Although he went down town once after reaching his mother's home to transact business, he was not able to keep his evening engagement. Our next word, except for a short note from him in which he did not speak of his illness, was that he was dead. Death resulted from enlargement of the liver according to the family physician, the enlarged condition having interferred with the proper action of the heart and lungs. The death was a shock to all of Hughie's friends, none here having reason to suppose that he was seriously ill. He himself at the time of leaving Las vegas was in good spirits and apparently anticipated much pleasure and benefit from his vacation. We extend to the sorrowing relatives, especially his mother who has long been ill, and to whom Hughie was especially dear, our sincerest sympathy, as do all the many close friends which he has made in Las Vegas. The editor of the Age and his family sorrow in common with those who are bound to Hughie by the closer ties of blood relationship.
