WISNER, aged 66 years. -------------- The message announcing the sudden death of John S. WISNER came as a shock to the people of Las Vegas. Mr. WISNER left Las Vegas Friday evening of last week with his intention of spending the summer in the Puget Sound country after a short stay in Los Angeles. He appeared to be in his usual health when he left here, although he had not been feeling vigorous since suffering a short illness several months ago. Mr. WISNER was a veteran railroad contractor of the West having spent a number of years in that business in the Pacific Northwest, in Arizona and elsewhere. He came to Las Vegas in 1904 some months before the railroad was completed. At the sale of the Las Vegas Townsite in May, 1905, Mr. WISNER bought considerable property here and soon thereafter purchased the corner of Main and Fremont streets where he built the original Overland Hotel. The first Hotel was destroyed by fire in the early morning of Tuesday, May 23, 1911, with a loss of one life and $50,000 in property. No discouraged, Mr. WISNER began again and soon had erected the present reinforced concrete structure known as the "New Overland Hotel." Mr. WISNER was a public spirited citizen always willing to assist in advancing the interests of the community. He leaves an estate of approximately $100,000 which, it is understood, goes to his daughter, Mrs. Ethel WISNER GENTHER, who resides in Banning, California. The remains are at Bramble's Funeral Home, Los Angeles, where the funeral will be held under the direction of the Goldfield Lodge of Elks of which Mr. WISNER was a member. The funeral will be held Monday and interment will be in Los Angeles according to present arrangements.
