She was 48. "It was a real shock to hear of her death," Mayor Jan Laverty Jones said Monday. "I was real fond of Marge. She will really be missed. She was a really nice person." HETHER was hospitalized Friday because of a severe sinus infection, city officials said. The infection spread to her heart. She supervised the licensing of businesses such as casinos, telemarketers and taverns. HETHER also was in charge of issuing child-care licenses and charitable solicitation permits. She served as acting director of the city Business Activity Department from July 1991 until last month. "Marge made work part of her life and, in some cases, maybe made it too much of her life," said Jim DiFiore, a co-worker and chief of the city's License and Revenue Division. "She worked eight to 10 hours a day and gave her heart to her work. Marge was a very devoted, dedicated and warm individual. She broke down the government vs. public barrier that usually persists in local government." She was born Sept. 21, 1943, in LaCrosse, Wis. HETHER, her husband and two sons moved in 1969 to Las Vegas from Wisconsin. In 1974, she took a secretrial job in the Business Activity Department. In July, 1980, she was named chief of the Privilege License Division. "She was wonderful. She was sweet, good and loyal," said Ila Britt, a former Business Activity Department director. "I worked with her for 10 years. Everyone loved Marge. It's a great, great shock. She was a beautiful young person, and she should have lived a long, long time." Councilman Arnie Adamsen said he was stunned to hear of HETHER's death. "We are just devastated," Adamsen said. "This is so sudden. She was a true professional and just one of the kindest, sweetest ladies I've ever had the pleasure to know."
