S. ARMY VETERAN Dr. James C. Harper, an 18-year decorated veteran of the U. S. Army and a professor emeritus at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, died of a heart attack Oct. 13 while vacationing at the Grand Cayman Islands. He was 70. Harper, a native of Geneva, Ala., received his bachelor's, masters and doctoral degrees in accounting at the University of Utah. He served in the U. S. Army from 1948-66, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and was awarded the Legion of Merit Award and the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster. He was stationed in Korea during the Korean War, and later worked for the U. S. Department of Defense in Washington, D. C. Harper lived in Ogden, Utah, from 1966-77, where he was an associate professor of accounting at Weber College. He also was chairman of the college's accounting department. He arrived at UNLV's accounting department in 1978 and stayed until the late 1980s. Harper is survived by [omitted] Services will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Zelzah Shrine Temple, 2222 W. Mesquite Ave. The family is requesting donations in lieu of flowers be sent to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital.
