Cathy was born March 18, 1952, in Los Angeles to Josephine "Dodie" and Vincent Lange. She spent her early childhood in the South Bay area, moving to Georgia for six years while her father worked there in the aerospace industry. Upon his death, Cathy and her mother returned to the South Bay where Cathy spent her teen years and early adulthood. She graduated from South High School in Torrance in 1970, then spent a year working as a clerk-typist in the Los Angeles office of the FBI. In 1970, she began a nine-year job with the Daily Breeze newspaper in the Classified Advertising Department, rising to the position supervisor of training and private party advertising. In 1981, Cathy married her husband, Jack Harpster, in Apple Valley, Calif., and in 1986, they moved to Las Vegas, where Jack served as director of advertising for the Las Vegas Review-Journal. During their 20-year stay in Las Vegas, Cathy was involved in volunteer work. Four years after Jack's 2002 retirement, the couple moved to Reno. Cathy was loved by everyone who knew her well. She was a completely selfless person, always more concerned with the well-being of her family and friends than herself. Even as her illnesses progressed, Cathy still devoted much of her time to counseling friends, phoning or visiting acquaintances who were ill or troubled and taking care of her husband. Her beautiful hand-made greeting cards and jewelry brought joy to all who knew her until she was forced to put those hobbies aside. She was a great lover of animals and birds, and took special joy in her dogs, DandyLion and Zippy. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Barbara Nicklin; and her brother, Lawrence "Larry" Lange. She is survived by her loving husband, John S. "Jack" Harpster; her brother, James Lange of Canyon Lake, Calif.; and her sister, Joanne Coppage of Sunnyvale, Calif. Cathy was a woman of strong faith and always trusted in God's path for her. Her family and friends can take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain, and is now in the warm embrace of our Lord. "Some people never shine no matter how much they are given; others will shine forever no matter how much from them is taken away. My Cathy is a light . . . Shine on, my dearest wife." Forever, Jack. Per Cathy's request, no services are scheduled. However, in the near future a celebration of life in her honor for friends and family is pending. In lieu of flowers, Cathy asked that you make a donation to the Nevada Humane Society, at 2825 Longley Lane, #B, Reno, NV 89502-5942.
