M. HEATON, BROTHER OF J. M. HEATON, DIES AT INDIANAPOLIS HOME Edgar M. HEATON, brother of Jas. M. HEATON of this city, died at his home in Indianapolis, Indiana, September 9, following an illness of only two weeks. Of the deceased, the Indianapolis Star of September 10 says: "Edgar M. HEATON, 63 years old, resident manager of the Fidelity and Casualty Company of New York, died yesterday morning at his home, 3415 Guilford avenue, following an illness of about two weeks. Death was caused by angina pectoris. "Mr. HEATON had been connected with the insurance company since about 1902. For several years he represented the company at Piqua, Ohio. He was made assistant general manager of the office in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1905. Three years later he came to Indianapolis as resident manager of the Fidelity and Casualty Company. "When still a young man, Mr. HEATON went to Texas and was a cowpuncher in the Panhandle during the 'cattle wars' of 1880. He was employed on the old Mexican Hat ranch. "Returning to Indianapolis, Mr. HEATON became a divisional officer on the Pennsylvania Railroad here. Later, he was sent to Bradford, Ohio. He was also in Columbus, Ohio, and Piqua, Ohio, as a representative of the railroad. "While in Piqua, he enlisted in a volunteer regiment and served during the Spanish-American war as a captain of the Third Ohio volunteer regiment. "Mr. HEATON was born July 4, 1860, in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Edgar Rush HEATON and Esther Ann MELVIN HEATON. His paternal grandmother was Nancy WEAVER, a direct descendant of the old SHARPLESS family of Philadelphia. A great-grandfather was Isaac HEATON, treasurer of Massachusetts in 1812. Mr. HEATON's maternal grandparents were John MELVIN and Esther BYRD, the latter of the early Virginia family of BYRDS. "Mr. HEATON's family moved to Indianapolis when he was a child, and he received his education in local public and private schools. Mr. HEATON was a member of Pentalpha Lodge, F. and A.M., the Scottish Rite, Knights Templar and Shrine. He was a past exalted ruler of the Elks' Lodge at Piqua, Ohio, and was a life member of the order. He was a stockholder in the Indianapolis Board of Trade. "The death of Mr. HEATON cast a pall over the meeting of the Rotary Club at the Claypool yesterday. He was one of the oldest and most active members of the club and for several years had given an annual prize, a watch fob in the form of a Rotary wheel with a diamond in the hub, to the member having the best attendance record. Speaking of the death of Mr. HEATON, Arch V. GROSSMAN, president of the club said: "'Rotary has suffered an irreparable loss in the death of Edgar HEATON. "He profits most who serves best," was in truth his life's motto. He could always be counted upon to render service, no matter how humble it might be, and he did it cheerfully and willingly. It was his characteristic also to be prompt at any task; he had no patience with time wasters. He had a passion for helpfulness, indeed, when it came to serving the children. He was especially interested in the helpless youth and fathered a Rotary plan to send underprivileged children to school. No man has given more heartily of his sympathy and service to boys than Edgar HEATON.' "Mr. HEATON is survived by his widow, a daughter, Desiree Dorothy, 7 years old; a son, Allan Schurmann HEATON, a retired lieutenant in the Marine Corps; a brother J. Morton HEATON, now in Nevada, and two sisters, Mrs. Edward SCHURMANN and Miss Edna HEATON, both of Indianapolis. "The date of the funeral has not been decided, but it will be held at the funeral parlors of Hissy & Titus, 951 North Delaware street. The Masonic service will be used.
