The ten miles to Arden was soon covered and it was soon evident that there was work for all those called for. Stark in death lay Domingo HERNANDEZ with a bullet in his heart. Wounded and bleeding from numerous cuts were Jose HERRERA, the murderer, and Jesus HERNANDEZ, the brother of the dead man. The usual combination of wine and women seems to be at the bottom of the affair, although the real motive--if there be one aside from that furnished by dago red mixed with violent language--is obscure. The facts, as developed by the coroner's inquest and at the preliminary hearing in Las Vegas Tuesday, are as follows: HERRERA, commonly known as HERNANDEZ, was pretty drunk and late Sunday afternoon fired two shots at random, one of which entered the tent occupied by Domingo HERNANDEZ (known as Jim). Jim then went to the tent where Jose was and remonstrated in language more forceful than elegant and, according to Jose's account, slashed him across the face with a knife. Thereupon Jose fired and Jim fell to a sitting position dead, with a bullet hole through his heart. Jesus HERNANDEZ, brother of the dead man, then took a hand in the trouble and carved Jose with a razor, the latter all the time making desperate efforts to shoot, but only succeeded in burning Jesus' face with the powder from the gun. The coroner's jury was composed of W. B. COOPER, C. E. BROWN, Thomas WEST, H. J. WILLIAMS, L. A. REYNOLDS and Harry LEVY. A special engine and car was run to Arden and brought the parties back to Vegas. Dr. Roy W. MARTIN looked after the injured, after which they were placed in the lock up for safekeeping. Undertaker Lloyd D. SMITH took charge of the body of the murdered man and buried it Monday at the ranch cemetery. On Tuesday Judge LILLIS arraigned Jose HERNANDEZ in the justice court. As a result of the hearing the defendant was held to answer to the charge of murder before the next grand jury. The brother of the dead man, Jesus HERNANDEZ, was held to answer to the charge of assault with intent to kill.
