Born April 3, 1919, son of Estes McDoniel and Gladys Julian McDoniel, in Monette, Ark. Graduated from Batesville High School, Batesville, Ark., and University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, with a bachelor's degree in biological science. He lettered there in track and football. He earned his master's degree from Utah State in school administration. He taught and coached football for two years in Harrison, Ark., and then came to Henderson in 1943 to work at the plants. He was hired to teach and coach at the newly-opened Basic High School. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on an LST in the Pacific theatre. At war's end he returned to Basic High School, where he coached, taught and served as assistant principal. He retired in 1974, after his last three years as principal. During those years, he served several terms on the Nevada State High School Athletic Board. He was elected Mayor of Henderson in 1969 in the primary and served one four-year term. He was a member of the LVCVA. He later served on the Henderson City Bond Commission. In 1988, he was honored by having an elementary school named for him and he remained active with projects there for the next 14 years. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; son, Sonny McDoniel and his wife, Pauline of Henderson; daughter, Nancy McDoniel Martin and husband, Dennis of New York City; and daughter, Linda McDoniel Wilhelm and husband, Ed of Silver Spring, Md. Other survivors include a sister, Helen Baucum of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV 89015. Graveside services to follow at Palm Memorial Park-Henderson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Basic High School, 400 Palo Verde Drive, Henderson, NV 89015, or Estes McDoniel Elementary School, 1831 Fox Ridge Drive, Henderson, NV 89014.
