He was 87. An Arkansas native, he came to Henderson in 1943. A year later, McDoniel, a football player and track team member at the University of Arkansas, was hired to teach and coach at the newly built Basic High School. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific theater off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, on an LST - landing ship tank - in 1945. McDoniel returned to Henderson and Basic High School, where for the next 30 years he taught, coached, served as assistant principal and finally as principal. He also served on the Nevada State High School Athletic Board. In 1969, McDoniel was elected mayor of Henderson in an upset victory over incumbent William R. Hampton. McDoniel had gained prominence in Henderson before the election, leading a group called Townsite in its fight against urban renewal projects. He served one four-year term. In 1988, an elementary school was named after him. It is located it 1831 Fox Ridge Drive, near Valle Verde Drive and Warm Springs Road. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway in Henderson. His family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Basic High School or Estes McDoniel Elementary School.
