COL. ROBERT NICHOLL U.S. Air Force, Retired Robert L. "Bob" Nicholl, of Las 
Vegas, sadly passed away June 8, 2013, after a long and brave battle against 
cancer. He was born Aug. 12, 1926, to Lathrop and Emma Nicholl in a small 
mining town in Utah. Upon achieving his Eagle Scout badge and graduating from 
high school, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve his country in 1944 as 
an airborne radio operator in North Africa and Pacific theaters. Discharged as 
a sergeant in 1947, he soon re-entered the U.S. Air Force after college studies 
and received his commission upon completion of Navigation School. After 
graduating from USAF Pilot training, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command 
flying KC-97, KC-135 refueling aircraft and RC-135 Reconnaissance aircraft for 
a career spanning over 30 years including service in Vietnam and Southeast 
Asia. He summarized his love of aviation by saying "The exhilaration of flying 
through moonlit clouds on night missions... Breathtaking." His 62-year marriage 
to Virginia S. Randal produced three sons; six grandchildren; and two great-
grandsons, who all survive his passing. Bob's last thoughts on his family 
were, "I am eternally grateful to my wife, children, grandchildren, and now 
great-grandchildren and the wives of my sons whose support and encouragement 
provided the completion of (their) successful careers. I am blessed." Bob is 
also survived by his brother, Richard; and sister, Norma. "Fly west Bob, may 
you always have tailwinds and clear skies." A celebration of life is pending. 
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
