PHILIP ORTIZ Philip Ortiz, 67, of Las Vegas, passed away Feb. 23, 2008. He was 
born May 15, 1940, in Los Angeles, to Benjamin and Sally Ortiz. His father was 
a civil engineer, and his mother was a homemaker. He lived in Los Angeles until 
he was 12 years old. Philip moved to Las Vegas, in 1952. He attended 5th Street 
Elementary School, 9th Street Elementary School, Sunrise Acres Elementary 
School and Rancho High School. At the age of 18 he went into the U.S. Navy. 
After his tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, he moved back to Las Vegas and began a 
career as a surveyor. He married Linda Chesson in 1960. They had two children, 
Benjamin Troy, born in 1962, and Tammy Lea, born in 1964. Philip always enjoyed 
his work and was a professional land surveyor when he retired from Wesco 
Surveys in 1998. Philip loved and played softball in his younger years; and, 
later in life, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed learning about computer 
technology. He belonged to a number of organizations including the Nevada 
Association of Land Surveyors, Operating Engineers Local 12, Los Prados Golf 
Club, and Rarely Golf League. Philip is survived by his wife, of 47 years, 
Linda Ortiz; his daughter, Tammy Ortiz-Sullivan and her husband, Sean Sullivan; 
his grandsons, Sean Troy Sullivan and Connor Philip Sullivan; his sister, 
Margaret Benton and her husband, Don Benton; and many nieces and nephews. 
Philip was much loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. A 
memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. 
Jones Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald 
House, One Kroc Drive, Oak Brook, IL 60523.
