Mrs. Perkins was born at Calwell, Clay county, Missouri, November 10, 1850. She crossed the plains with her parents when she was but two years of age. The family arrived in Salt Lake City in 1852 and remained there for eight years, during which her father, a master builder and millwright, helped to build the Salt Lake theatre, the Nauvoo House of Joseph Smith, and other buildings. She recalled many events in the history of the community when she was a small girl. In 1862 the family moved to Dixie, Utah, responding to a call from Brigham Young. They were three weeks in making the trip to St. George in a wagon pulled by a yoke of oxen. When she was 17 years old she was married to Ute Warren Perkins. They were the parents of 13 children, Eva, Ute V., LuEmma, Joe, Pearl, John, George, Mary V., Fay, Ralph, Clara, Sadie and Vivian Perkins. In 1882 they moved to Moapa which at that time was swamp-land from St. Thomas to Logandale. There were only two white women living in Overton, one in Logandale, and one in St. Thomas. There were frequent encounters with the Piute Indians living in the area, according to stories she told. In 1903 her husband died and she was left to care for several small children, living as a real pioneer of the area. She was prominent in the work of the L.D.S. Relief society.
