WILLIAM SILL Dr. William D. Sill "Bill," 70, of Las Vegas, died Saturday, March 15, 2008. He was a native of Las Vegas, born July 30, 1937, to James M. and Louise Sill. He was one of four children, James O. Sill of Eugene, Ore., C. Gary Sill (deceased), and Janice Bullock of Centerville, Utah. Bill graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1955, then served military service in the U.S. National Guard and Army Reserves. He also served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1958 to 1961, in the Argentina Mission. He returned to Argentina to work as a petroleum engineer and married his wife, Nelida Salinas of Mendoza, Argentina, April 27, 1961. They had four children, Zabrina Baird of Las Vegas, Tania Sill of San Antonio, Lynda Dior of Taylorsville, Utah, and Bill Sill of Austin, Texas. Bill completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University, where he received a B.S. in geology in 1963, then went on to Harvard University, where he obtained an M.S. in geology in 1965, and a Ph.D. in geology, with special training in vertebrate paleontology in 1968. Bill was a research associate at Yale University (1968- 70), professor of paleontology (1971-76), and chairman of the geology department (1973-74) at the National University of San Juan, Argentina. He changed career paths when he accepted the position of director for Church Education Systems in Argentina for the LDS Church (1976-78), director of the LDS Institute in Austin, Texas (1978-89), and director of the LDS Institute in Norman, Okla. (1989-92.) Bill and his wife returned to San Juan, Argentina, in 1992, where he was a professor of paleontology at the National University of San Juan, and he led field digs into the provincial park Ischigualasto, also known as The Valley of the Moon. The Ischigualasto Basin is one of the best exposed and most complete Triassic sedimentary sequences in the world. Bill was one of its founders and helped to declare it a World Heritage site. He shared this treasure with all his loved ones and also introduced Earthwatch volunteers to its wonders. Bill is survived by his wife, children, and 12 grandchildren. Services will be in Las Vegas and in Austin, Texas. Viewing will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, March 24. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, both at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1500 Las Vegas Blvd. North.
