She was born December 2, 1908 in Meadow Creek, VA to Elder M. E. and Ida (Lowe) Poole. Peggy came to the Southern Nevada area from the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1928. She heard there were opportunities for work in Southern Nevada due to the construction of Boulder Dam. Once here, she never left; and she carried out her life and dreams in Nevada "her way." Near the completion of Boulder Dam, Peggy moved to Nelson, NV about 45 miles south of Las Vegas where she became part of the Simon family and helped manage the Techatticup Gold mine until 1942. One of her jobs was stacking gold ingots into the trunk of her car to transport to the shipping office. It was one of the richest mines in Southern Nevada until its closure at the beginning of World War II. As an inspiring entrepreneur and successful businesswoman she was a true pioneer of Southern Nevada. After the Techatticup closed Peggy and her husband P. A. "Pop" Simon purchased the little town of Jean, NV located 32 miles south of Las Vegas. Pop's Oasis became a regular stop for travelers on the highway between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. In the early 1950's Peggy and Pop constructed one of the landmarks of old downtown Las Vegas, the Simon Building. Located on the corner of Third and Fremont it included the Melody Lane Restaurant, the Photo Mart, and on the second floor offices, the IRS. In the early 1970's it became the Red Garter Gambling Hall and Saloon and is now part of the Fremont Hotel and Casino. Peggy was always willing to lend a helping hand and she was a strong believer in helping others pursue the opportunity to further their education. Peggy enjoyed working with various civic organizations over the years, but her real pride and joy was the Las Vegas Mesquite Club. She was a member for over 60 years. In the last couple of years Peggy would often say she was near the top of the mountain. She has reached the mountaintop and passed over to the Promised land. Her family and many friends will miss her. She is survived by her son Peter Simon, daughter-in-law Janet, grandchildren, Peter A. Simon and Joy Marie Simon, sister Lila Combs of NC, nephews R. Jay Simon and Virgil (Corky) Poole and nieces Patricia Poole and Barbara Olson. The date and time of a memorial service is pending. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in the Mesquite Club of Southern Nevada, P. O. Box 14424, Las Vegas, NV 89114.
