FORMER CASINO HOST DIES



Services are set for Billy Snyder, a longtime Las Vegan and former casino host, 
who died Thursday in a local hospital.  He was 81.

The 32-year resident of Las Vegas was born Jan. 5, 1906 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 
and was a member of West Gate Masonic Lodge.

Snyder spent his early years in Los Angeles as a vaudeville performer, a stand-
in for George Raft in movies and owner and operator of the Bandbox and Melody 
Room nightclubs in Hollywood.

He moved to Las Vegas in 1955, and worked as executive casino host for more 
than 25 years at the Dunes, Sahara, Frontier and Landmark Hotels.

Snyder was able to attract high rollers to the casinos in which he worked.

"He was really an asset to Las Vegas and he's going to be missed," said his 
longtime friend, Ray Borders.  "He was very vibrant.  When  you met the 
gentleman, he treated you like a king all the time."

A U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II, he spent his recent years doing 
volunteer work for veterans.

He is survived by a brother, Peter, of Encino, Calif.; and stepson, Woodie 
Woodworth of Las Vegas.

Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. Sunday in Palm Valley View Mortuary, where 
services will be at 1 p.m.  Monday.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of 
flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
