Joe was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Taunton, Mass., to Katherine and William. He grew up in Rhode Island and served our country during World War II on the USS Matagorda and the USS Kasaan Bay. At the end of the war, he obtained a GED and attended UNR where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Rhodehamel. On Aug. 25, 1951, they were married in a Catholic church across the street from Manzanita Hall. Joe and Evelyn taught school at the Reese River Indian Reservation and in Stockton, Calif. Joe was teaching the sixth grade in 1955, when he moved his family to Washington D.C. With a great interest in the law and with encouragement from Nevada's Senator Alan Bible, he attended George Washington School of Law and worked in the U.S. Capital building. Joe practiced law in Nevada in the early 1960's, and from 1966 to 1969, he served as U.S. Attorney for Nevada before accepting the position of Assistant General Counsel for the Senate Committee on Small Business in the U.S. Senate in Washington D.C. In 1972, he and his family returned to Nevada where Joe served a second term as U.S. Attorney before accepting a presidential appointment to sit as Nevada's first U.S. Chief Magistrate. Joe eventually retired from federal service in 1988. Joe was involved in the political world during his college days and before becoming a U.S. Attorney. At UNR, he was president of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a founding member and president of the Sons of Erin. He was a grand knight with the Knights of Columbus. He also initiated Law Day in Nevada, which is May 1st. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Jeannie; and parents and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his sister, Kay Farrell; brother, Hugh Ward; daughters, Evelyn Harrington and Alice Ward; sons, Joseph Ward, William Ward, John Ward and Robert Ward; and 16 grandchildren. Thursday, June 16, at 6 p.m. there will be a Rosary at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Friday, June 17, Joe will be buried next to his soul mate, Evelyn, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, Joe mentioned before he died that he would prefer donations made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
