Although running slowly, the engineer was unable to see where the track had been undermined. Without warning the engine hit a soft place and overturned, pinning John WOOL, the engineeer, under the monster machine, an easy prey to the great quantities of steam escaping from the boiler. His entire body was frightfully scalded. The fireman managed to escape, but not until he too was probably fatally scalded. A relief train was made up at once and the injured men and their families and physicians started on a quick run to Los Angeles. WOOL died in terrible agony as the train reached Victorville, and his body was taken in charge by the coroner at San Bernardino. The fireman was taken through to Los Angeles.
