Deceased was a well known figure in the early days of Nevada. He came to Nevada in 1861 and conducted a freighting outfit from Sacramento to Virginia City. A few years later he purchased the Ashland House on the divide between Gold Hill and the Comstock. The venture was a successful one and the owner cleaned up quite a fortune, which later went into unprofitable mining schemes. He served one term in the Nevada assembly, but we do not know which county he represented. He lived in California for five years previous to coming to Nevada and taught school there. He was of rare intelligence and was well schooled. As old Age overtook him he was stricken with palsy and was prevented from earning his own livelihood. It seems that his family had owned an interest in a plank road near the old homestead which was finally taken up by the county and he received $900 as his interest and while the money lasted he paid his way but during the past few years had been a charge of the county. A niece, who had a kindly feeling for the old man, sent a sum of money to county clerk Jepsen a few years ago with the instruction to give him a decent burial when the end came. Her request was followed out to the letter. The funeral services were held from the Genoa church last Saturday Afternoon. The interment took place in the Genoa cemetery and a strictly honest upright man was laid to his final rest.
