It is the county seat of Elko County, the second largest county in Nevada in area, and second largest in taxable value. It is the largest town along the Southern Pacific Railroad between Sparks and Ogden. In the center of an immense agricultural country, it is also in the center of a great mineral belt running due north and south through Elko County, and from its topographical situation is the natural shipping and supply point and consequent business center of an immense district. The town of Elko has two churches, a county high school with five teachers, a public school with five teachers, telephone connections with all parts of the county, an electric light plant, mountain water supply, a splendid bathing resort, two daily and two weekly newspapers, two saddle, harness, bit and spur factories, a sampling plant, large natural hot springs, a sanitarium, two banks, a flour mill, a large lumber yard, an opera house in course of construction, a steam laundry, numerous dry goods, grocery and general merchandise stores, a drug store, hotels, all the leading orders, a chamber of commerce and a mining bureau.
