ELKO TRAGEDY

    Bessie ANDY, an atttractive young Indian girl, was murdered in Elko 
Friday night of last week by Jose SALGADO, a Mexican, who cut her throat 
and inflicted five other knife wounds upon her.  She died immediately.  
The tragedy occurred in the busiest spot in Elko in full view of a dozen 
men, who were powerless to avert the awful act.  SALGADO rushed ahead of 
the mob which took after him and escaped lynching only by surrendering 
to the sheriff before the mob reached him.  It is said that the girl had 
been trifling with the Mexican's affections.
