David Melarkey of Humboldt The Silver State of the 10th inst. Says: Last evening about 7 o’clock, Hon. David Melarkey died at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Guilliume, here, after a lingering illness of nearly three years. He came to this coast at an early day, and in 1863 left Colusa, California, for this country, where he has since resided. He was elected to the Legislature in 1878, and re-elected in 1882. Though a plain-spoken man, who made no pretensions to being a public speaker, he commanded the respect of his fellow legislators and was known as a man who could neither be cajoled nor bribed to support any measure that he did not believe to be for the best interests of the people. He was among the few who did not forget after election the pledges they gave as candidates, and because of his devotion to right, be acquired the reputation of being stubborn. He was a good citizen, a steadfast friend, and an honest man. He was a member of Humboldt Lodge No. 16, I.O.O.B., and his funeral, which is announced to take place tomorrow (Saturday), will be conducted in accordance with the rites of that Order.
