May 18- Patrick Martin, one of the oldest residents of Austin, died in San Francisco on Saturday, May 11. It was his dying wish to be buried in the pretty cemetery in Austin, in which district he passed over forty years. The remains accompanied by his widow Mrs. Ida Martin, reached Austin via Battle Mountain on Tuesday, May 14, and reposed in St. Augustine’s Catholic church during the night. Requiem mass was celebrated next morning for the eternal repose of the soul of deceased by the Rev. Father W.H. Corcoran before a large and representative congregation. At 2 o’clock one of the largest funeral corteges seen for years assembled at St. Augustine’s to pay the last honors to the memory of the late Mr. Patrick Martin. After reading the beautiful prayers prescribed by the ritual the Rev. Father Corcoran delivered an eloquent discourse on the departed. He said, “Mr. Martin was known to be always an upright and honest man, a man whose very word was his bond. He was a man of unimpeachable character, loved by young and old. He was kind, generous and charitable to a fault, but permeating, aye, directing his whole life was his strong spirit of Christian faith and plenty. He was a fervent and practical Catholic who bore his long sufferings previous to the end with true Christian patience and fortitude. He died fortified with all the rites of holy church and consolations of his religion” Wreaths, crosses and many floral decorations were sent by the numerous friends of the deceased. Father Corcoran officiated impressively at the grave.
