The first authentic record of the rich deposits of Pioche puts the date at about 1864, but no location was made so far as is known until 1869, when a Mr Ely located a portion of what afterwards became the famous Raymond and Ely Mine, and began to extract ore. The first mill was erected at Bullionville, 12 miles south of here in 1870, and the second at about the same time and in the same year at Dry Valley by the Meadow Valley Co. These mills both used the Washoe process of wet stamping, the pulp going to pans for amalgamation with quicksilver, to settlers for separation of the amalgam, to retorts and furnaces where it was run into bullion. The first ore found was largely a silver chloride, but later complex silver ores carrying much lead and in places copper, zinc, antimony and arsenic, with a little gold were the predominating product. The recovery by the Washoe process was often as low as 50 per cent, a better percentage of extraction being realized of the silver values than of the gold, and the effort being to leave in the tailings just as much as possible of the undesirable lead and copper. The production reaached its zenith in 1872, waned till 1884, when it was almost nil, revived slowly and again reached a maximum in 1891, when the prospect of a railroad put life and heart into the whole region. It seemed as if the old glory of Pioche was going to come again, this time to stay. But the decline of silver, the panic which ensued, the abandonment of the railroad project, and the various disasters which came in train, destroyed the opportunities which had fostered illusive hopes, and Pioche lapsed into the abyss of despair. Utter paralysis came to the place. Its people mostly fled to other sections, the buildings were even torn down and moved away, and the buried cities of antiquity seemed to furnish a melancholy analogy to this city, which once had resembled in orgies at least a Tyre and a Sidon. When however the trump of the resurrection day sounded for the State of Nevada, Pioche even heard and answered the call. Born again, she is now radiant with life and looking confidently to a future brright and long. Measured by the value here of the material extracted from the mines of Pioche and vicinity to date, the best estimate procurable puts it at $75,000,000. Of this amount between $40,000,000 and $50,000,000 doubtless found its way into the world's circulation, and added that much to its permanent enrichment. Upon the old dumps at the mines and mills and in abandoned stopes there are hundreds of thousands of tons of material yet to be treated, and which will add millions of dollars more to the bountiful record of a great camp, while the record of past production is the certain earnest of things to come. The town possesses a good water system, school, bank, newspaper and a number of substantial business houses.
