And at the conclusion of the interview the reporter had to remark: "Well, I am not a real reporter, but, believe me, this has been a real interview and it's just too bad that some of the best parts cannot be published!" Mrs. Mary Welland is one of the old residents. The late Henry Welland, her husband, was one of the first men to come into the district. He was the first locator of the famous Delamar Mine, on which he filed a discovery notice but did not have time to do the location work, and later when finding time and returning to the property he found it located by another and the work done. Mr. Welland new Brifogle well and did considerable dangerous work in looking for the famous lost mine from which the prospector Brifogle has brought samples running high in gold and to which he was unable to return, due to his loss of the memory of the direction caused by injuries inflicted by the Indians. Mr. Welland met Brifogle after he recovered from his injuries and made several trips in search of the property. Once he was caught by the Indians and saved only by the fact that he was wearing a soldier's coat. On another trip, when supposed to be near the mine, his guides deserted him and he was forced to return. Always there were signal fires of the Indians flashing from peak to peak, and in the calm days the columns of smoke stretching to the sky and warning of the intruder. On another trip blinded by snow. Always kept in hope by the story of Brifogle, confirmed by the rich samples and further confirmed by the chunks of gold which Mr. Welland himself saw among the Indians. Mrs. Welland is now living in Los Angeles in a mighty neat residence overlooking the orange blossoms, but alas, "where one may rust overnight in the salt sea breeze." "Yes, a nice place to live. Call up instead of walking down, press the buttons instead of the kerosene cans, and no $3 for water, either. But the most pleasant years of my life were spent right here and I have a soft spot in my heart for old Pioche." Additional Comments: Mary Welland, wife of Henry Welland, returned to Pioche for a visit and was asked for an interview. This is her short tale of the Lost Breyfogle Mine regarding my great-grandfather's part in the story.
