Mathews very neatly and successfully performed the delicate operation of extracting the pieces of skull embedded in the brain of John Capitan who had been injured by a blast at the Day mine. There were some thirty-eight pieces of bone taken from out the brain, measuring from over half an inch in length down to the size of a No. 3 shot. The end of one of the large pieces of bone penetrated the brain matter two inches. On Wednesday Dr. Mathews extracted two more pieces of bone from Capitan's brain, making a total of forty pieces. There was also considerable rock washed and picked from his brain. These pieces of bone and rock can be seen at Dr. G.R. Alexander's drug store. Since the operation was performed the patient has been gradually improving, and there are slight hopes of his recovery, yet Dr. Mathews says should such prove to the result, it will be a miracle.
