James Crawford, who died at Oakland at three o’clock yesterday morning of valvular disease of the heart. The deceased had been ailing for some time and left Carson about two months ago in the hope that a change of climate might benefit him, but the disease had become too far advanced to be stayed by any human agency. Mr. Crawford was born in Kentucky, 52 years ago, and came to the Pacific coast in 1853. He was for several years, in company with W.S. Byrne last Treasurer of the Carson Mint, engaged in the publication of Mountain Messenger at Laport, Sierra county, Cal. He also served one term in the California Assembly from the same county. The exact date of his arrival in Nevada is not at hand, but it was early in the sixties. He settled in Dayton, where for many years he was the Superintendent of the Rocky Point mill. In 1865 he was elected to the Nevada Assembly and was re-elected to the same body in 1872. Eleven years ago Mr. Crawford was appointed Superintendent of the U.S. Mint at Carson, which position he held at the time of his death. When it is known that Mr. C grew to manhood before he could either read or write, and that his education was acquired by the light of a candle in a miner’s cabin, something of an insight to his energy, application and how character is obtained. The funeral will take place to-morrow at Carson under the auspices of the Masonic Fraternity, for which many years he was a member. His remains were brought up from Oakland and taken to Carson yesterday morning and his funeral will take place to-day under the auspices of the Masons.
