Edwards The Last of a Greatly Respected Old Man James Edwin Edwards, who recently died at Quincy, was beloved by a large circle of acquaintances. From a long obituary in the Plumas National the following facts are condensed: He was an Englishman by birth, came to California in 1864, and next year settled in Plumas, where he has lived ever since. Honest and upright in his dealings, strong in his friendships, generous and liberal to a fault, with a warm heart and a sympathetic nature, he was loved and respected by all. Old and young, rich and poor, all felt that when “Uncle Jim” laid down the cares and burdens of life, and passed “over the river,” a man among men had departed, a friend had gone whose place will not soon be filled. Even the Indians and Chinamen loved and respected him, and asked and were granted a place in the procession which followed his remains to the grave. His house has been for years a haven of rest for the weary traveler, and times without number, when a stranger came, without money or friends, has he been fed and rested and sent on his way rejoicing. For many years he was one of the foremost man in business circles in Plumas, and was always ready to do his share toward anything which promised to be a public improvement. He was a member of nearly all of the secret societies, and took an active interest in all Lodge matters, in each of which he will be missed by a host of brethren who knew and loved him well. The funeral was the largest ever seen in Plumas county, and it was estimated that at least 1,000 people were assembled at the cemetery. Large delegations from Indian Valley, Greenville, Taylorville, Crescent, Meadow Valley, Spanish Ranch, Nelson Point, Johnsville and Eureka were in attendance.
