Robert H. Lindsay received a telegram from Carson this afternoon conveying the sad news that United States District Judge Edgar Winters Hillyer, died at his residence in Carson this morning. Judge Hillyer was a native of Ohio and about 48 years of age. He came to this coast in the early days, devoting several years of his life to mining to California. He moved to Virginia City in 1862 or ’63, and commenced the practice of his profession. In December, 1869, President Grant nominated him for the position of United States District Judge for this district. On December 21st he was confirmed by the United States Senate, and immediately entered upon the discharge of his duties. Judge Hillyer received an injury on the head several years ago which produced softening of the brain, and since September last his faculties have been impaired, and at times he has been completely deprized of his reason. He leaves a wife and several children. The funeral obsequies will take place in Carson to-morrow afternoon.
