Blake came as a shock to his many friends in this city. The other night, during the storm, a stove pipe having become disarranged, he went out to fix it. He was on the porch, when his daughter, Mrs. Houston, heard a noise and going to the door, saw her father lying on the porch. Assistance was summoned and the body carried into the house. Dr. Hodgins, who had been summoned, found, upon his arrival, that life was extinct and that the probable cause of death was heart failure, induced by old age. Blake was a pioneer, having come to Virginia City in the early ‘60s, after having mined for some time in Idaho and California. For many years the deceased had been employed as a hoisting engineer, and was looked upon by the officials as one of the most careful and capable men in this city. He was for many years employed in this capacity. Blake was born in Dublin, Ireland, 70 years ago, but came to this country when but a lad. He served on term as county commissioner, and during his tenure of office was regarded as one of the hardest working officials the county ever had. A wife, six sons and four daughters survive him. They are: David Blake, chief dispatcher at the Oakland mole; Edward, Sylvester, Jr., Joseph, John and William of this city; Mrs. George Hester, Mrs. H.L. Huston, Mrs. M.Devney, and Miss Helen Blake. The funeral services will be held on Monday from St. Mary’s church.
