By the death of Mr. Canavan, Nevada has lost one of her largest-hearted, truest men and best citizens, and may the sands of Lone Mountain rest lightly upon his casket. Since the above was put in type the following has been received by telegraph: On Saturday he was out riding with Hon. George W. Cassidy, Congressman from Nevada, and on that evening was attacked with hemorrhage which terminated his life. News of his death spread quickly, and was received with profound sorrow by every person who knew him. Weekly Nevada State Journal August 30, 1884 Canavan’s Funeral The funeral of the late Captain Matt Canavan was held Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco at 2:30 o’clock. The cortege left the family residence, 210 Jones street, and proceeded to the Catholic cemetery, where a solemn requiem mass was celebrated in the chapel and the remains committed to earth. A large number of friends and acquaintances of the deceased was present. Among those present were Hon. William Sharon, Hon. John P. Jones, Dennis E. McCarthy, John Brady, ex-Governor John H. Kinkead, Governor Jewett W. Adams, Hon. George W. Cassidy, Warren J. Sheridan, Hon. Thomas Wren, Hon. M. D. Foley, M. C. Hillyer, W. S. Hobart, Harry Flannery, W. H. Oliver, Charley Lyons, John Rossiter, H. M. Levy, H. M. Yerington, H. M. Higgins, James Gannon, Benjamin Fitch and R. D. Kelly. The floral tributes were quite numerous and beautiful. The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers: Governor J. W. Adams, Hon. George W. Cassidy, Ben Fitch, W. E. Sharon, Charles Lyons, H. P. Flannery and D. E. McCarthy, all of Nevada; David Scannell, George Rossiter, George T. Marye, Morris Hoeflinch, Philip McGovern, William T. Higgins, R. P. Hastings, Judge J. B. Coffey and Samuel Rainey.
