Daily Nevada State Journal May 24, 1888 Death of John A. Paxton. – John A. Paxton, originator of the Virginia City gas works; died at sea recently on the voyage from New York to Liverpool. Mr. Paxton leaves two grown sons. Mr. Paxton started Paxton’s Bank in Eureka in 1870, and made a great deal of money. He was succeeded in that bank by Senator M. D. Foley and others. He was an able and energetic business man. He died about the 18th, when within one day of Liverpool. At the time of his death he was still President of the Virginia Gas Company. He started a bank in Virginia City called Paxton and Thornburg’s Bank in the building now occupied by the Nevada Bank. He also conducted a banking business in Reno for a short time. Again, he was interested in the banking firm of Paxton & Curtis in Austin for a number of years. He was worth about $2,000,000 at the time of his death. His son, Blitz, was with him on ship board. They had started to make a tour of Europe. He will return with the remains. The oldest son Charles, is now a resident of Healdsburg, California.
