The deceased was a native of Cornwall, England, and was known and appreciated as a whole-souled, generous man. When he first came to this country he followed the vocation of a miner until an accident many years ago robbed him of his right hand. Some 20 years ago he came to Gold Hill where he engaged in the saloon business, a vocation he has followed since that time. Physically he was almost a giant and one of the last men to be selected as a victim of pneumonia. Old Jack will be missed from his daily haunts and a hoist of warm friends will deplore his untimely death. His funeral will take place-to-day under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias, of which he was a devoted member.
