Per the history of this cemetery as provided by the Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, "in 1879 a transfer of deed was recorded for a parcel of land that was to be used as a cemetery. The land was transferred to a Catholic priest for the use of St. Mary's Parish. That parish and its cemetery eventually became St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral Parish and cemetery in 1910. Newspaper records show a burial at the original St. Mary's in April, 1879. Land for Mater Dolorosa (Our Mother of Sorrows) cemetery was purchased from a local rancher just North of downtown Reno in 1928. This cemetery was and still is owned by the Diocese. " "In 1963 because of the growth of the city, it was decided that St. Thomas Cemetery needed to be closed. Space in the cemetery was no longer available and it was not possible to purchase adjacent land. The graves were transferred to Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery which was just about a mile away." The following list of names were taken from obituaries which indicated the deceased was buried in "the Catholic cemetery", "St. Thomas Cemetery". There was another Catholic Cemetery in Sparks which opened in the early 1900's, Holy Cross Catholic cemetery. The cemetery has disappeared and there is an assumption that these interments may have been reinterred to the Our Mother of Sorrows cemetery. To see the obituaries, go to http://www.usgwarchives.net/obits/nv/obitsnv.htm There have been news accounts of bodies unearthed in the vicinity of North Virginia St. in Reno in the 1880s as well as in recent history. This indicates that some of the deceased were not reinterred as suspected. *************************************************************************************** * View a picture of the tombstone at http://www.usgwtombstones.org/nevada/nevada.html *************************************************************************************** The following persons may or may not be interred in Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery LAST FIRST MIDDLE DEATH AGE OTHER BONNETTE Claude 1/1/1912 BRUNETTE Maria 3/4/1912 CASSINELLI Willie 4/15/1912 CECCARELLI Marin 11/14/1913 CONAGILAN James A. 3/15/1912 DESMOND John 4/21/1912 ETCHEVERRY John 8/18/1912 "buried in the catholic cemetery" GHIGGERI Angelina 10/2/1912 GHIGGERI Casper 8/24/1913 GIBEAU Emanuel 10/25/1912 GORDON MILDRED 9/12/1912 JONES Vivian 10/6/1912 KENNEDY Martin 5/29/1912 LIEVRE Mary 2/14/1912 MARIANI Evelyn 8/13/1912 MAY Quielda Frances 6/12/1912 McCALL Alice 5/22/1912 1 day old; Burial in the "Catholic Cemetery" McCARRAN Susan 7/19/1889 Funeral from Catholic Church McCORMICK William 8/20/1912 66 Native of Canada; McMILLAN Daniel 5/14/1912 MINER W.
