He was a brother of Frank Bell of Reno, former governor of Nevada, and during his early life followed railroad wOrk for a time. He is said to have been the first conductor on the Virginia & Truckee railroad. Bell was the first, or one of the first conductors on the Virginia & Truckee, Joe McCormack, secretary of the Elks lodge of Reno, who began railroading on the V & T in the early 70s, stated, "I know Bell quite well but he left the road about 1871," McCormack said. "I didn't go on until 1872. Bell ran between Carson and Virginia for several years-some time before the road was extended on into Reno. A native of Canada, he came to Nevada after his brother, Frank Bell, and after railroading for a number of years between Reno and Carson, entered business there. He was a cousin of the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Gaham Bell. Funeral services were held in Reno Tuesday afternoon, from the Masonic Temple, Mr. Bell having been a member of Reno Lodge F & A.M. Gardens.
