Bertie Budden, who has been very ill for some time, died yesterday afternoon.

The funeral of Bertie Budden will take place from the Episcopal Church on Monday
afternoon at 2 P.M.  Those friends desiring to see the remains will call at the
house, as the coffin will not be opened in the Church.

A Promising Youth Called Beyond the Dark River
Burton B. Budden, after a lingering illness with much suffering for several
weeks, breathed his last Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock.  The deceased was the
oldest son of Mrs. Mary Budden, residing near the water front, west of Sierra
street, his father having gone before him about four months ago.  Burton was
born in Downieville, California, on the 18th day of December, 1864.  Although
not quite of age, he was a member of Washoe Hose Company, No. 2, of this place,
and was a promising young man and respected by all his associates.  Immediately
upon the announcement of his death the fire department was draped in mourning. 
The funeral services took place from the Episcopal Church Monday, under the
auspices of Washoe Hose Co., No. 2, assisted by Rose Company No. 1.  Rev. Wm.
Lucas, rector of the Episcopal Church, preached the funeral sermon.  The floral
decorations were exceedingly beautiful and the services, particularly the music,
were touching beyond expression.  A large audience, composed of the young
friends of deceased and friends of the bereaved widow and afflicted family,
attended, escorting the remains to their last resting place in the Firemen’s
lot, Hillside Cemetery.  Heavier affliction than usually falls to the lot of a
small family, has visited this little home circle during the past few months. 
As above stated, the husband and father, after a long illness, was borne to the
cemetery a few months since, and now the angel of death takes away the mother’s
pride and a sister’s and younger brother’s hope.  The whole community deeply
sympathize with the afflicted widow, the bereaved mother, brother and sister;
and the noble fireboys, aided as they will be by a kind-hearted public, will see
that the widow and orphans are relieved from unnecessary anxieties by reason of
this last great affliction.
