Dowdell This Morning Miss Grace A. Dowdell, for some time past a teacher in the Carson public schools, died this morning at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Leete, this town. She was a charming lady and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends, who now mourn her death. Together with her mother she came from New York City, her birth place, to Virginia City when a child. The mother died in Virginia City in 1879, and just prior to her death she requested of Bishop Whitaker that he and his wife look after Grace, which they have done with the greatest solicitude. Miss Dowdell graduated at the Bishop’s School for Girls, and afterwards accepted a position as teacher in the Carson public schools. For a long time she suffered with a stomach trouble identically the same as that that caused her mother’s death. She was 26 years of age last Thanksgiving. Her brother-in-law, J. T. Brenan, arrived in town this morning from San Francisco, to which city the remains will be taken for burial on this evening’s train. Died- Grace Anna Dowdell. Born November 25, 1860. Died April 6, 1887. At the residence of Mr. B. F. Leete, in Reno at half past 8 o’clock this morning, Grace Dowdell was called to her early rest. She was known and loved by very many in the town and State as a true friend and earnest Christian. Since her mother’s death Bishop Whitaker has been a father to her. She was educated in the Bishop’s School for Girls, where she was from its beginning till 1881, when she graduated with honor. Since then she has been teaching in Carson, where her fidelity and ability won all hearts. She overtaxed her strength, but owing to her ambition did not give up until about Christmas time, when it could no longer be avoided. She broke completely down. In Carson her many generous friends did everything for her comfort, but the last of January she came to Reno to be with Mrs. Leete, one of her oldest and warmest friends, who, from that time till her death, cared for her as tenderly and lovingly as her mother could. There will be a service at the house this evening at 5 o’clock and the body will be taken by her brother-in-law to her sister’s house in San Francisco, from where she will be buried and laid beside her mother in the Masonic cemetery.
