All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nv/nvfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Kathleen Grace kgrace@vbe.com June 1, 2004, 11:05 am Reno Evening Gazette Feb. 29, 1924 Patrick M'Carran, Pioneer, Dies At Ranch Home Another pioneer of Washoe county passed away this morning when death claimed Patrick McCarran, since 1858 a resident of this state and nearly all of that time spent on his ranch near Ditho, just east of Sparks. Mr. McCarran died at 9:30 o'clock this morning. He had not been well in recent weeks, but his condition was not considered alarming. His only son, P.A. McCarran, Reno attorney, reached the ranch home before his parent expired. Mr. McCarran was born in Londonberry, Ireland, in 1833 and came to the United States when only sixteen years of age. His eyes on the West, he came to Nevada as a soldier in the army of Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock in 1858 and for a time was stationed at Fort Churchill. When he obtained his discharge he located on the ranch just east of Sparks, which has been known for sixty years as the "McCarran ranch," and which has been known for its hospitality. Mr. McCarran, married in Reno in 1875, one son being born, P.A. McCarran, former justice of the state supreme court and now a practicing attorning in Reno. For a time the elder McCarran lived in Reno, having his home on the site now occupied by the new junior high school. He was the contractor for the Highland ditch, the first irrigation ditch built in the Truckee Meadows. His widow and son are the only survivors. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but probably will be held Sunday from the Sparks Catholic church.
