A. MAC CANDLESS, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. SPRAGUE, was accidentally killed in the United Eastern mine at Oatman, Arizona, Friday, February 13. MAC CANDLESS was well known at Goldfield, Reno and other places in the northern part of Nevada. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted with the California "Grizzlies." serving with his regiment during the war. AFter his discharge he accepted a position with the United Eastern. He leaves a widow and a little daughter. Of the widow, the Reno Gazette says: "Everybody who lived in Goldfield during the camp's days of high prosperity knew and liked Mrs. MAC CANDLESS, who as Sallie SPRAGUE grew up in the district and was a leader among the younger set. She is not out of her teens yet. The young widow will have the sympathy of all old Goldfielders in her bereavement." The Mohave County Miner (Kingman, Arizona) gives the following account of the manner in which the young man came to his untimely end: "MAC CANDLESS, who was a cage man, was at a station just below the 800 with his working partner when the accident occurred. They had just sent the skip in the other compartment to the surface, and the skip in the compartment where the accident occurred had gone below their level while the skip on top was unloading, and was started back to pick them up and take them to the level above, as they had finished loading at that level. MAC CANDLESS was looking into the shaft to see if the lip on the loading lift had been hooked properly and ventured too far, the downcoming car catching him as it passed that level."
