The following appreciation of Mr. Laughton was written by one who knew him for many years. In the passing of Summer Lee Laughton Nevada has lost one of her oldest and sturdiest pioneers. Probably no man was better known to young and old alike than Sam Laughton, as he was familiarly known. Like the pine trees or his native state of Maine, Mr. Laughton was a tower of strength, with the splendid character of those sturdy pioneers. Born on February 10, 1835, Mr. Laughton came to California in 1852 by way of the Isthmus of Panama Mining engaged his attention in the counties of Placer and Sierra until the call from over the hills brought high to Nevada in 1859, where he followed ranching and stock raising until 30 years ago when he bought and fitted up the well-known Laughton Hot Springs, five miles west of Reno. On January 8, 1863, Mr. Laughton claimed as his bride Miss Nancy O’Neil, a daughter of prominent pioneers Mr. Laughton was always a devoted husband and father, a reliable man of affairs a loyal citizen and one whose true nobility of character awakened for him respect and honor wherever he was known. A devoted wife, eight children and 16 grandchildren survive Mr. Laughton. The surviving relatives are George S. Laughton, Mrs. Abbie Quinn, Charles S. Laughton, Mrs. Nancy Zaun, Mrs. Pearl Marrett, Mrs. Ruby Thomas, Asa and Frank Laughton; a sister in Norridgewock, Me., and a brother Benjamin Laughton, of Sierra county, California.
