He had been slowly failing in health for about a year. The 15th of last May he had a mild stroke of paralysis which was followed in a few days by pneumonia from which he recovered and seemed to be well out of danger when another stroke brought on more rapid failure. Mr. Leonard was born at East Poultney, Vermont, Aug. 15, 1838. When a young man he emigrated to Illinois, teaching school for several years in rural districts not far from Chicago, to which city he moved in the early sixties. From then until 1909 he lived continuously in Chicago, except for two years. His life work in Chicago was bookkeeping and expert accounting and though handicapped since boyhood by being physically crippled, he made a brave and faithful fight, meeting with more success than many a man more favored by nature. In 1868 he married Ellen Thurston, also a native of New England, who died in 1903. For some time during the sixties Mr. Leonard was employed in the music store of Root & Cady, the former of whom was Geo. F. Root, the author of many patriotic and other songs. In 1909 he came to Reno to reside with his daughter Mrs. H.P. Boardman. Mr. Leonard was a man of sterling integrity and strong character; always solicitous to help all with whom he came in contact. In late years he took great pleasure in letter writing and many will miss his cheering and helpful letters. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. H.P. Boardman of Reno, a brother, Mr. Henry L. Leonard of Waukee, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. E. J. Smith of Chicago Heights, Ill.
