Four boys, Herbert, Dan and George Lund and Alva Brundridge left town yesterday morning on a rabbit hunt along the Peavine road. In a small canyon about two miles south of Reno they soared up a young cottontail rabbit, and in an effort to capture it alive Dan Lund dropped the old muzzle loading musket he was carrying and it went off, the charge of birdshot with which it was loaded striking Herbert in the left leg below the knee. The unfortunate boy's leg was almost torn off by the shot, as his leg was near the muzzle of the gun. The wounded boy was carried to the road by his companions, and from there he was conveyed to his parents home in Powning's addition. Drs. Philips and Hershiser were called at one. A glance at the shattered and mangled limb showed amputation was necessary. The operation was performed, but the boy had lost so much blood that he died shortly after 3 p.m. The lad's parents are prostrated with grief at the terrible accident, and the boys, especially Dan, are beside themselves with sorrow. The date and place of the funeral will be announced later.
